When too many people gather in the same place at the same time, the environment can no longer withstand the pressure. And this is where reforestation comes into play: taking care of the land is one of the first steps toward leaving the place in better condition than we found it.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address this challenge, Forest Effects was created\u2014a WOWnature series that measures the visible and scientific impacts of our reforestation projects. Through this series, we show why a tree does more than simply capture CO\u2082; it generates complex benefits in many ways.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this episode dedicated to the topic of <strong>tourism<\/strong>, the goal is to show how to transform travel from a consumer activity into an active force for conservation, enabling anyone to transition from the role of a mere tourist to that of a<strong> true steward of the local area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is overtourism: the numbers on overcrowding<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phenomenon of overtourism occurs when the number of visitors exceeds a destination\u2019s physical, social, and ecological carrying capacity. Data on tourist overcrowding reveal a complex reality that no longer affects only cities of art. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Italy, 75% of tourists are concentrated in just 4% of the country\u2019s territory. A prime example is Venice, a city that accounts for just 0.1% of Italy\u2019s total area but alone attracts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrid-online.it\/static\/upload\/turi\/turismo-sostenibile-territori-unesco-rapporto-2024.pdf\">12% of the country\u2019s total tourist traffic<\/a>. But the pressure is also shifting significantly toward natural and mountainous areas:<a href=\"https:\/\/assets-eu-01.kc-usercontent.com\/b5376750-8076-01cf-17d2-d343e29778a7\/595e710b-0e16-43ee-88cc-2827c099e7a3\/Pr05_2026.pdf\"> in South Tyrol, for example, tourist arrivals have increased by 65% since 1990.<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This uncontrolled influx has immediate consequences:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>water consumption<\/strong>: intensive water use is putting a strain on local reservoirs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>habitat fragmentation<\/strong>: constant foot traffic along trails damages the flora and disturbs wildlife;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased emissions<\/strong>: Tourism-related travel exacerbates transportation-related pollution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Overtourismo-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"WOWnature tourism\" class=\"wp-image-3108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Overtourismo-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Overtourismo-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Overtourismo-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Overtourismo-1536x861.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Overtourismo.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beyond overtourism: the climate crisis and extreme weather events<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complicating the overall picture is the combined impact of the <strong>climate crisis<\/strong>, which is manifesting itself through increasingly frequent and extreme weather events. The most dramatic and recent example was <strong>Storm Vaia<\/strong> in 2018, which toppled millions of trees in the Dolomites with wind gusts of up to 200 km\/h, followed by the <strong>bark beetle<\/strong> infestation.<br\/>This tiny beetle, measuring just 3 mm, reproduces in spruce trees and, by burrowing tunnels under the bark, blocks the flow of sap, causing the tree to dry out.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These disasters have brought to light a long-standing vulnerability in our forest resources:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>postwar monocultures<\/strong>: to quickly restore the hillsides, it was decided to plant almost exclusively spruce;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>low biodiversity: monospecific spruce forests have been found to be extremely vulnerable to strong winds due to their shallow root systems;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the spread of pests<\/strong>: The lack of plant diversity, combined with very hot summers, has allowed the bark beetle population to grow, attacking many trees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sudden loss of forest cover has taught us a fundamental lesson: nature is not simply a beautiful backdrop for our photos, but a <strong>living infrastructure<\/strong>. Countless benefits depend on the health of the forest, such as the stability of slopes against landslides, the safety of hiking trails, and the stability of the entire local economy. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Turismo-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"WOWnature tourism\" class=\"wp-image-3107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Turismo-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Turismo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Turismo-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Turismo-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.wownature.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/WOWnature_Alta-Badia_Turismo.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Alta Badia case study: reforestation and GSTC certification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But how do we move from theory to practice? Our case study takes us to Alta Badia, an open-air laboratory in the Dolomites where strategic land management is demonstrating how nature and tourism can regenerate together. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2020, we have been working to reforest a heavily affected area on the Campolongo Pass, near Corvara (BZ). This project arose from the direct involvement of citizens, tourists, and local authorities, as well as local businesses, hotels, and tour operators who took a hands-on approach. Together, we have planted new trees to diversify the species present, creating a mixed forest and a resilient woodland capable of withstanding the challenges of the future.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Roberto Huber, director of Alta Badia Brand\u2014with whom we are working closely on reforestation and the protection of the valley\u2014explains, the effort didn\u2019t stop at planting trees. In addition to these on-the-ground initiatives, Alta Badia Brand has decided to embark on a comprehensive approach toward <strong>responsible land management<\/strong>. To structure this vision and establish concrete guidelines, the destination is implementing the standards of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etifor.com\/it\/certificazione-gstc\/\"><strong>GSTC<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Global Sustainable Tourism Council<\/em>)  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why are we talking about the GSTC?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GSTC is the international body that sets global standards for sustainable tourism.
