It is the enhancement of a responsible approach to the development, production and distribution of environmentally friendly products and services, as an integral part of the company strategy.

We live in an era of profound transformation, in which the climate crisis is a primary economic variable. We can say that green marketing has definitively left the niche space for “activists”, moving towards the centre of a market that rewards those who act with transparency and penalises those who harm environmental and human resources.

Indeed, the data show that people are increasingly favourable towards sustainability-oriented companies. A joint analysis by McKinsey & NielsenIQ conducted in 2023 on real market data showed that products carrying sustainability (ESG) claims on the label recorded cumulative sales growth of 28% over five years, against 20% for products without such claims. Moreover, sustainability is becoming a key decision factor. About 65% of consumers say they buy products from brands that act responsibly, even if this means spending more.

If sustainability used to be a free choice of pioneering companies, today it is imposed by an increasingly stringent legislative framework, especially in Europe. Here are the main, most up-to-date regulations:

CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive): the EU directive requires more than 50,000 companies to publish detailed reports on their environmental and social impact. Sustainability thus becomes certified legal data, on a par with the financial statements.

ECGT (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition): the directive known as 2024/825 imposes transparency on the durability and repairability of products at the point of sale. It also strengthens protection against early obsolescence and greenwashing practices, guaranteeing consumers clear information on the legal guarantee.

Green Claims Directive: to counter greenwashing, the EU is introducing rules that ban the use of vague terms (such as “eco” or “green”) unless supported by scientific evidence and third-party certifications. Marketing must therefore move from creativity to data.

What you will find in this guide

In this article you will find concrete advice on how to integrate activities that benefit the environment into your strategy and operations. Indeed, acting now gives you a positioning advantage that in a few years will be unbridgeable. At the end, you will find a section dedicated to case studies of companies that have integrated sustainability into their core business, with great success.

Sources and Reports Consulted:

McKinsey & NielsenIQ (2023), “Consumers care about sustainability—and back it up with their wallets”.

Simon-Kucher (2023), “Global Sustainability Study”.

Deloitte (2023), “Consumer Signals: Sustainability in Retail”.

Bloomberg Intelligence (2024), “ESG Assets on Track to Top $40 Trillion by 2030”.

What is green marketing (and what it is not)

Green marketing consists of the development, commercialisation and promotion of products or services based on real environmental benefits. However, it cannot be reduced to a simple advertising lever: today companies operate under the strict control of the Antitrust authority and of the new European directive ECGT (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition), already approved in 2024, which severely punishes greenwashing and early obsolescence. While awaiting the Italian implementing decree that will define the specific penalties, and further regulatory developments such as the proposed Green Claims directive, transparency is no longer optional.

While traditional marketing aims at maximising profit in the short term, green marketing integrates environmental and social responsibility into the core strategy, orienting the company’s positioning towards a long-term vision and rigorous legal compliance.

Sustainable marketing adopts the Triple Bottom Line approach:

Profit: economic sustainability over time.

People: social equity and respect for workers along the supply chain.

Planet: regeneration of resources and minimisation of impact.

It is important to stress that green marketing covers the entire product life cycle — from the sourcing of raw materials to ecodesign, from logistics to environmental communication — and is not limited to managing the product’s end of life, such as recycling.

The fundamental principles of green marketing

To build effective green marketing strategies, you need to rest on pillars that guarantee solidity, transparency and consistency to the narrative:

Measurement and analysis of environmental impacts: the starting point is awareness of the company’s emissions and environmental impacts. This data can be obtained through internal measurements or entrusted to industry experts. Etifor, the company WOWnature is part of, also offers this service: discover the MARC method.

Definition of clear objectives: the end point of the strategy must be measurable, realistic and achievable. In this way, it is possible to create a feasible path tailored to the company, avoiding falling into greenwashing.

Simple and transparent communication: create content based on real facts and up-to-date, accessible data, if possible verified by third-party bodies and certifications, such as ISO 14001 and B Corp.

Adapt the message to all digital channels: from the internal newsletter to social media, online platforms help share the environmental journey and increase engagement.

This approach aligns perfectly with the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, in particular goal 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and 13 (Climate action).

Why do green marketing: the benefits for companies

Adopting a green marketing strategy is a far-sighted choice and should not be seen as a façade operation. In an increasingly saturated and aware market, sustainability becomes the lens through which companies can look at their own inefficiencies and turn them into opportunities to evolve.

1. The value of trust: reputational benefits

A brand is the perception that consumers have of a company, its products or services. Building a credible eco-friendly brand means creating a bond with your customers that goes beyond the commercial transaction. When a company demonstrates a real, and not merely declared, commitment, it builds up a huge capital of trust over time.

Choosing this path brings positive effects not only on customers, but on all stakeholders: investors are more willing to bet on solid and responsible businesses, and business partners prefer to work with suppliers who do not represent a risk to their own image. Brand loyalty becomes a barrier against competitors who focus only on price competitiveness.

2. Differentiation and attractiveness: competitive advantages

Green marketing opens the door to high-value-added market segments. There is a growing share of consumers, defined as “LOHAS” (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability), willing to pay a price premium, that is, to spend more, for products that guarantee a reduced impact.

There is an equally important internal challenge: attracting new talent. The new generations (Gen Z in the lead) look for employers with a “purpose”, a goal that goes beyond profit, explains a study conducted by Deloitte. A company perceived as environmentally and socially responsible attracts and retains the most up-to-date professionals, reducing turnover costs and increasing enthusiasm and internal productivity.

3. More efficiency, less waste: economic benefits

It is often thought that sustainability is a cost, but operational reality tells a different story. Implementing green strategies means, in practice, optimising processes.

For example, reducing the use of water, energy and raw materials translates into savings on bills and less dependence on raw material price fluctuations, thus achieving greater efficiency in resource consumption.

As for risk management, companies that anticipate the effects of the climate crisis are more resilient. Those who have already diversified their energy sources or shortened their supply chain are less vulnerable to market shocks, environmental disasters or sudden resource shortages, ensuring business continuity where others stop.

4. Navigating the rules: regulatory alignment and subsidised finance

Finally, there is the “legal security” aspect. The European Union is raising the bar with regulations such as the Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) or the ECGT. Complying early is a way to gain a time advantage over less reactive competitors.

Moreover, the world of finance has changed course: ESG investments (Environmental, Social, Governance) are now the norm. Companies with a solid sustainable marketing plan have easier access to subsidised credit lines, lower interest rates and the attention of large investment funds, which see “green” as an indicator of long-term stability and seriousness.

Companies often start out of regulatory obligation, but quickly discover that the economic return and the improved working climate are the real drivers of growth. We see this in the next section, dedicated to brands that have distinguished themselves positively in green marketing.

Green marketing examples: who does it well

To move from theory to practice, it is essential to look at those who have managed to turn environmental values into a concrete growth lever. Those who go beyond simple advertising have designed their business model so that the company’s success coincides with the regeneration of the planet.

Here are some emblematic examples, from global giants to Italian excellences in the sector, including clients we are accompanying on a corporate social responsibility journey.

Patagonia: activism as brand identity

Patagonia is undoubtedly the most cited example. It has made activism the heart of its commercial strategy. Its most famous campaign, “Don’t Buy This Jacket”, published on Black Friday, invited consumers to reflect on compulsive purchases and to repair old garments instead of buying new ones.

Instead of pushing for immediate sales, it built unshakeable trust. The result? Steady revenue growth and a community of “loyalists” who see a purchase as an act of support for a higher cause.

Finance: Banca Etica

In a sector often perceived as distant from environmental and social values, Banca Etica has turned savings into an instrument of change. Its model is not limited to total transparency — which allows every customer to check online which projects are financed — but is based on a rigorous ethical selection of investments.

Unlike traditional finance, Banca Etica applies absolute exclusion criteria: it does not finance in any way the production and trade of weapons, the gambling industry, fossil fuel extraction or activities based on child exploitation. Instead, it directs capital exclusively towards positive-impact initiatives, such as organic farming, social welfare and renewable energy. This positioning attracts a growing number of savers who seek consistency between their values and the use of their money, reducing the reputational risks typical of the banking sector.

Food: Alce Nero

A pioneer of organic farming in Italy, Alce Nero does not sell a product but a pact between farmers and consumers. Its communication focuses on the safeguarding of biodiversity and on soil health. Through a narrative that puts the faces of the producers and the quality of the land at the centre, Alce Nero has become synonymous with clean agriculture, managing to compete in large supermarkets while maintaining a very strong ethical identity.

Beverage: Levico Acque

Levico Acque is an extraordinary example of how a company can aim for minimum impact on the environment. It was one of the first “Benefit Corporations” in the sector and bets everything on the exclusive use of returnable glass, eliminating plastic. Its green marketing strategy tells the story of the whole infrastructure. Through the scientific approach of Life Cycle Assessment, the company monitors 100% of its emissions (obtaining EPD certification) and constantly reduces them following the rigorous international standards of the Science-based target initiative. Its commitment does not stop at production efficiency: by collaborating with Etifor and WOWnature, Levico supports the growth of new forests. It is an example of how a company can integrate climate risk mitigation and biodiversity protection into its strategic core, guaranteeing total transparency to consumers.

Tourism: Alta Badia

In the tourism sector, Alta Badia has embarked on a path to become a low-impact destination. From managing flows on the Dolomite passes to promoting electric and sustainable mobility, the resort communicates a mountain to be protected, not just consumed. By focusing on international certifications (such as GSTC), Alta Badia aims to educate tourists towards a more conscious approach and attracts an audience willing to invest in experiences that respect the Alpine ecosystem, guaranteeing the conservation of the landscape, which is its main resource.

Authentic green marketing: avoiding greenwashing

Greenwashing is the most talked-about challenge of modern marketing. Greenwashing is the communication or marketing technique that tries to capitalise on the growing demand for low-environmental-impact products and behaviours, shining a spotlight on actions that are in fact not authentic, but promoted solely to appear more “sustainable”.

The issue of greenwashing (façade environmentalism) is now regulated in the European Union. The strategy is simple: it is not enough for a company to be “good”, it must be able to prove it with scientific data and can no longer use vague messages to attract consumers.

It is not just an image crisis. The risks today are structural:

Legal risks and penalties: the entry into force of the ECGT directive (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition). Companies that use misleading claims risk heavy penalties, which can reach 4% of annual turnover, says the regulation.

Reputational damage: a greenwashing complaint can trigger media crises and social media “shitstorms” capable of destroying in a few days trust built over decades.

Exclusion from markets: the Antitrust authority (AGCM) aims to protect consumers from misleading advertising and can block entire non-compliant marketing campaigns.

To avoid greenwashing, communication must evolve from “creative” to “scientific”. Based on our experience and research, these are the four fundamental guidelines to follow:

Replace promises with data: it is no longer permitted to declare a product “sustainable” based on intuition. Every claim must be supported by technical studies such as LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) or the Carbon Footprint calculation. In the absence of scientific evidence, the claim is considered misleading by law.

Goodbye to vague and absolute terms: the EU has banned generic attributes such as “eco-friendly”, “green” or “nature-friendly” unless supported by accessible data and reports. Communication must be precise: instead of “green packaging”, you must state, for example, “packaging made with 90% recycled plastic”.

Third-party certifications: using recognised marks verified by independent bodies (such as FSC for forest products, EU Ecolabel or GSTC standards for tourism) guarantees that the claim has been externally validated.

From “Carbon Neutral” to “Contribution Model”: it is more effective and credible when companies first measure and reduce their internal emissions; support for projects such as those of WOWnature should be communicated as a contribution to the planet, not as a licence to call a product “zero impact”.

In short, the golden rule is: don’t communicate intent, communicate data. Only an approach based on transparency and measurability allows sustainability to become a real competitive advantage, protecting you from legal and financial risks.

Where to start: first steps for your strategy

You do not need to revolutionise the whole company in a week. Green marketing is a progressive path that requires method and scientific rigour to avoid missteps. Here is how to move from intentions to facts through a structured path:

1. Measure and analyse: the MARC approach

The first fundamental step is to understand where your company stands today. Thanks to the consulting of Etifor (a spin-off of the University of Padua), you can adopt the MARC approach (Measure, Abate, Reduce, Communicate), a scientific method that guides you step by step to calculate the environmental footprint of your organisation or products (LCA). Without reliable data, there is no credible communication.

2. Define objectives and manage risk

Once the impact has been measured, you need to set clear targets (for example, reducing emissions by 20% in three years) and analyse the climate risks that could hit your supply chain. This allows you to prevent future crises and to present yourself to stakeholders with a solid resilience plan.

3. Act on the territory

To make your commitment tangible and visible, you can invest in the territory close to you with the forest and biodiversity protection projects of WOWnature. Choose to plant new trees or protect existing forests in Italy or around the world, so as to tell your commitment through tangible initiatives.

4. Communicate without risks

Involvement must not be only external, but start from the heart of the company. One of the main advantages of collaborating with Etifor and WOWnature is support in telling the story of the project. We help you create authentic green marketing campaigns, providing you with reliable data, multimedia materials and impact reports ready to be shared with your customers, avoiding any risk of greenwashing for personalised storytelling.

Conclusion

Green marketing is not a cost, but an investment in the future value of your business. It is the lever that turns social responsibility into an unassailable competitive advantage, creating value for the environment, for people and for your bottom line. Choose an approach based on science and on results you can see grow, year after year.

Contact the WOWnature team for a consultation

Today sustainability is no longer an added value of ethical companies, but a structural necessity for business survival.
